Seonhee Moon
Seonhee Moon explores issues in our society that are rarely discussed or whose weight of damage is considered light. The images she creates are minimal and take on a neat format through repetition and variation, but their content is sharp. Through the special argument of photography, she informs us of parts we didn't know or makes us see things we already knew in new ways, creating empathy and compassion by prying open the gaps in conventional thinking.
From <Bury>, which documented over 100 burial sites of farm animals buried for epidemic prevention, to <Un/asked>, based on interviews with over 80 elementary school students during the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, <What's going on?>, which captured places where aerial protests occurred over the past 15 years, <Older than names>, a 10-year work of water deer portrait photography, to <Dear my friend>, which reconstructed pigeon flight into Korean letter forms – each series reveals the fictional nature of 'coexistence' that our society pursues and the contradictions and absurd operation of systems through description and suggestion. She listens to the voices of others and builds her works by accumulating time. Her works contain records, memories, and prayers. She is an artist who stands behind the weak and a quiet questioner who makes viewers think.
